Dickie Lee’s birthplace, Hobbs, New Mexico, is in a part of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico that is fertile ground for producing musicians. Several small towns and cities within a hundred miles of Hobbs are the birthplaces of many famous names in the music business, including Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Mac Davis, Gary P. Nunn, Sonny Throckmorton and the legendary Norman Petty Studio That proximity is incidental, but nonetheless, Dickie Lee’s roots are authentic. Musicial influences are: Merle, Waylon, Willie, Tom Waits, John Prine, Sonny Throckmorton, The Band, Earl Scruggs, Bill Keith, Van ‘the man’ Morrison, Beatles, Credence, Captain Beyond, Buddy Miles, Glenn Miller, Cream, Rodger Miller, Moody Blues, Pure Pairie League, Marshall Tucker, The Outlaws, Country Gazette, Pink Floyd, Ventures, Miles Davis, Lefty Frizzell, Mozart, Nick Lowe, Jerry Douglas, Al Munde, Beethoven, David Grisman, and many, many more . . . Dickie moved to Austin in 1978 with a banjo, guitar, dog and a girlfriend . . . “I still have the banjo and guitar . . that was 33 years ago . . . amazing . . . over those years I’ve written around 140 songs, toured Europe as a solo artist, and cut 7 independent albums . . . good albums . . each one I did the best I could do at the time. . . It all boils down to being a spiritual journey rather than a musical tour.” I just finished a new song last week . . . now I have 5 songs for the next album . . . I love to write. I’ve been co-writing a lot this past year . . I love writing with other writers or deep/free thinkers . . By the time SXSW gets here Dickie will be debuting his newest release, AGAIN THE WALL . . a collection of original songs performed with an accompaniment, solo with guitar and banjo . . .
